Although this event is geared for parents of juniors, ALL parents are welcome to attend. Please join us for this informative event. Financial Aid Night Review

Financial Aid Night for Senior parents was well attended. Many aspects of the financial aid process were covered by Matt Carpenter from College Funding Services.

Two very important forms were mentioned. The FAFSA and the CSS profile. We encourage parents to investigate both applications ASAP. Don't forget you can take advantage of  a FAFSA on the web work-sheet. This can be helpful as you navigate through the FAFSA process.

We encourage parents to get familiar with the MEFA web-site. MEFA provides a wealth of free, accurate and up to date information. Amy encouraged parents to try the MEFA tools page, which has a number of tools you can use such at the EFC Calculator. The EFC calculator can estimate the figure that colleges will use to determine eligibility.

Kaplan Test Prep

Once again KAPLAN will be offering an SAT or ACT Prep course at BHS this summer. The summer prep courses offered are designed for class of 2019 only. Click here for the schedule.  Members of the class of 2019 should call 1-800-KAP-TEST to enroll.

Financial Literacy Event

Dr. Seuss wrote, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.”

As your children grow and decide how they are going to start out on their own path to financial independence, we’d like to help start the conversation in getting them on their way!
On Thursday, August 16th at 2 PM, we are hosting a Financial Literacy event for high school and college-age students here in our Burlington office (Parents encouraged too!).
We will be discussing the following topics;
  • How and when to get started saving
  • Deferring instant gratification
  • Investments 101
  • Good Debt vs. Bad Debt
We’ll be having a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Sundae bar for the kids (and the kids at heart), as well as a barista for made-to-order coffee drinks (for the adults, of course)!
Please find the details below, we hope to see you there!

Advice for the Class of '22

Each year during the counselor visit to Marshall Simonds, we like to share advice for the incoming freshman class from the current freshman class. As always, the freshmen who've made the transition have great advice for their younger peers.

Just be you.

Participate as much as you can, and work hard because it counts.

Don't spread yourself too thin. Try to do as much as possible but also make sure you have some time for yourself.

Make friends with the upperclassmen.

Be confident; speak up!

Pay attention and take good notes.

Don't stress out.

Stay in your own lane and focus on yourself rather than doing what is "popular."

Do all of your homework and classwork (it actually affects your grade).

Always be nice to everyone.

Come in a couple of times during the summer to walk around the building.

Stay organized.

Make sure you are taking the right classes based on your academic abilities.

Get involved and make the most of it because really does go by fast.

Always read the books assigned in English.

Don't be afraid to participate by talking.

School is your number one priority but also get involved.

Manage time between after school activities and homework.

Take responsibility for your own grades.

Always make free time to do what you like and explore.

If you need help, ask a teacher or staff member. They are all nice and helpful.

Follow the teacher's directions.

Keep close to your friends because they will help you through.

It's OK to be yourself.

Financial Aid Workshop

Many families focus on the college search, selection and admission process. We believe that figuring out how to pay for college is also an important part of this process. The BHS Guidance Department will sponsor a Financial Aid Workshop hosted College Funding Services on:

This seminar will provide information on:

(3)   Why you should apply even if you WILL NOT qualify for need-based aid
(4)   Fin Aid deadlines i.e. FAFSA/CSS profile
(5)   How to value different assets – Home, 529’s, retirement, etc.
(6)   Which colleges give the most money
(7)   How to leverage colleges against one another
(8)   How to appeal your financial aid package
