Arlington High School Spring College Fair

All Students, Parents and Neighboring High Schools are invited to The Arlington High School
Spring College Fair!
This event will be held in the TOZ (Red) Gym on
April 9, 2018 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

This year, over 100 colleges from across the country will take part in the AHS College
Fair. Many of the college representatives who attend the fair are the same as those
who make the admissions decisions for our geographic area. This is a great opportunity
to meet the representatives and/or alumni face-to-face, to ask questions about a
particular college major, and to inquire about general admissions requirements. The
College Fair is free and open to all students, their parents, and any staff or community
members who would like to attend. Junior year students are strongly encouraged to
attend. All neighboring high schools are welcome to invite their students and parents to
attend the fair as well. Please note the attached ‘Guide to Making the Most of your
College Fair Experience’,which is meant to be used as an aid when speaking with the
various college representatives. A comprehensive list of colleges that will be
represented at the fair is also attached, although colleges continue to register
daily.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
The College Fair program is a FREE opportunity for you and your family to meet with
the representatives and alumni from colleges and universities throughout the country
without actually leaving your home state. There will not be enough time to visit with
every college and university at the fair, so we have listed some suggestions on how
to use your time most effectively.

BEFORE THE FAIR…
Before the fair, it’s a good idea to do a little preparation.
Answer the following questions to help you determine what kind of school would best suit you:
    • Do you want to attend a two or four year institution? Co-ed or single-gender?
    • What size school do you want to attend?
    • Which programs of study are you considering?
    • How far from home are you willing to travel?
    • Do you wish to participate in any specific extracurricular activities or athletics?
    • Do you want to attend a school located in an urban, suburban, or rural environment?
    • Do you require any special services (i.e., tutoring, note taker, readers, interpreters)?

  1. Discuss your college plans with your guidance counselor, family, teachers, and friends.
  2. Research your colleges of interest on Naviance via the Internet in the guidance office, media center, computer lab or your home.
  3. Check dates and registration deadlines for college entrance examinations.
  4. Create labels or profile cards with your name, address, email, and phone number, name of high school, year of graduation and your area of interest. This will help avoid time spent on filling out Information Cards on College Fair night.
  5. Bring a pen or pencil and a notebook to jot down notes about the conversations with individual college representatives, and pick up the cards of college representatives for future reference.  It is helpful to have a specific name when requesting information or and interview!

AT THE FAIR…
  1. Pick up a bag and fair directory.
  2. Visit with colleges and universities that meet your criteria.
  3. Talk with a representative at the Information Table if you have any questions or need help with your college searc

QUESTIONS TO ASK COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES...
·      How can I arrange a campus visit? Are there any special college visitation days?
·      What are the application deadlines for admission and financial aid?
·     How do you assign faculty advisors to students, especially those who are undecided
about their major?
·      What percent of students are commuters?
·      When must I choose a major?
·       What types of extracurricular activities exist on campus?
·       How accessible are the professors outside of class?
·       How are roommates selected?
·       How safe is your school?
·      Does your college offer additional academic services such to students such as
tutoring, career
counseling, study skills workshops)?
·        What types of internship/co-op experiences are available?
QUESTIONS TO ASK COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES REGARDING DISABILITIES
AND ACCOMMODATIONS
·        Are there specialized programs available?
·        Are there special admissions procedures?
·        Which standardized tests are required?
·        What types of documentation are needed to request accommodations?
·       Should testing and/or an IEP be sent with my application when applying or after a
decision has
been made?
·       What types of accommodations (note-takers, tape recorders in class, etc.) are
allowed?
·   Are there extra fees for learning disability related services?  If so, what is the
approximate cost?
Still have questions? Please feel free to speak with your guidance counselor about
any college-related
questions.

2018 Scholarship Program

Members of the BHS Guidance Department met with Seniors to give an overview of the Burlington Scholarship Program. Below is a recap of what was covered:

-Use the Naviance list as your main link to all of the scholarships we post. This list also includes a link to the "Scholarship America" site. Check back on this list once a week as new scholarships will continue to be added throughout the next few months. Click on the link for a specific scholarship and read the paragraph description at the middle of the page for eligibility requirements and directions on whether or not you will need to request a transcript. A majority of our local scholarship applications will be posted just after February vacation.

-On the Scholarship America site, work on answering as many questions on your profile as apply to you, but don't worry about how "complete" your profile is. No one's profile will be 100% complete. You do NOT need to fill out the financial information or request a reference/recommendation. You DO need to request transcript information and parental consent. You MUST have a separate login from your parent in order to receive scholarships. Please click here for a helpful list of guidelines you can follow to ensure you are completing the information correctly.

-Keep an eye out for the "Burlington High School General Scholarship" application, which will be posted on Naviance after February vacation. This is another application (like Scholarship America) that will put you in the running for a large number of our local scholarships if you turn it in.

-If any of this is confusing or if you have questions that come up, plan to drop in for one of the before or after school help sessions in the Guidance Conference Room. We will announce these each week through the daily announcements in homeroom. If you don't hear them in homeroom or forget, the announcements are also linked each day on Mr. Sullivan's blog.

Upcoming help sessions are this Friday, 2/9 from 7:00-7:40, next Tuesday, 2/13 from 7:00-7:40, and the Thursday after vacation, 3/1, from 2:00-3:00.

Advanced Placement Examinations at Burlington High School

In May of this coming Spring, the College Board will be administering the Advanced Placement Examinations to all eligible students.  Students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP exam or exams.

By taking an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam, you can save on college expenses: most colleges and universities nationwide offer college credit, advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam scores. These credits can allow students to save college tuition, study abroad, or secure a second major.

Students must register to take AP exams no later than Friday, February 26, 2018.  In order to register all students MUST go to www.totalRegistration.net/AP220470. After registration is complete students MUST print the confirmation page and return it to the BHS Guidance Office, along with a check, for all AP exams ($94.00 each).
